Paper Quilling or coiling is an engrossing and simple paper craft that involves making coils of paper strips and shaping them to make decorations for cards, scrapbooks, boxes or many other types of objects.

The craft of paper quilling started hundreds of years ago and was apparently first employed by nuns using the cut off edges of religious books and documents; coiling them around a feather quill (hence the name quilling) and using the coils to decorate religious pictures and artifacts.

A slotted quilling tool can be used to coil the paper but once you get the hang of it you can use a large needle or a toothpick.  Ready cut paper strips are available to buy in hundreds of colors and designs, including pearlescent and metallic styles.  The most commonly used width of paper strip used is 1/8” however, thinner and thicker widths are available.

The coils can be made tight and then glued to remain in this position or allowed to loosen, glued and shaped.  Loose coils are much easier to shape for petals, leaves, butterfly wings or geometric shapes.

Quilling lends itself to making Christmas tree decorations such as snowflakes or angels and you can buy kits containing all the supplies needed to make these.  It is also a way to decorate handmade greetings cards to make a unique card that is sure to be appreciated by the recipient.
